Program Information
Surgical/Medical Program
Doctors volunteer needed vision surgeries & treatment for cataracts, retina care, glaucoma, and more. Through private contributions and support, the Foundation covers discounted costs for medications, equipment, surgery center, and ancillary services.
There is no cost to qualified patients or their families. While patients come from all over Texas, the surgery and care takes place in the Greater Houston area. Applicants work with a Foundation program coordinator throughout the process.
Program patients:
- Are Texas residents of any age.
- Meet and provide proof of income thresholds for low-income households.
- Are uninsured or underinsured.
- Have been denied treatment from Medicare/Medicaid and county health care programs.

Eye Care for Kids Vision Program
Student Optometric Program
Greater Houston-area optometrists provide low-income, uninsured area students with free eye exams and glasses. The Foundation covers the direct cost of frames and lenses for the student. There is no cost to the patient or their families. A program coordinator works with the applicants to help navigate the process and, upon approval, care.
Program patients:
- Are Greater Houston-area students (5-21 years old).
- Meet and provide proof of income thresholds for low-income households.
- Do not have vision health insurance.

School Vision Screening
To help identify students who may need glasses or other vision care, Foundation volunteers are available to help with school vision screenings in the Greater Houston area. All screeners have been trained and received state certification. In Fall 2022, our volunteers saw 1,766 students in high-need schools and communities – 23% failed this initial vision screening.
